1939 Australian newspaper article reporting David Selznick intended to produce a version of Titanic. Selznick had planned to have Alfred Hitchcock direct the film. The intended project was scrapped because of high cost estimates. Selznick and Hitchcock went on to combine to make Rebecca ( 1940 ). A Hitchcock take on the Titanic sounds like it would have been interesting.

The big difference with the announced advertisement is that, for whatever reason Barbara Stanwyck didn't end up in the film and the lead role was played by Carole Lombard in the finished product, as seen below..

William K, Howard and William Joyce Cowan were past their use by dates in Hollywood by 1949, so financing was probably not forthcoming.
Phar Lap's story was eventually told and appropriately made by Australians and released in 1983.
