I've checked and it certainly looks like his signature, and it came from a long time collector who had other autographed pieces in his collection, so perhaps he forgot he had it? I'll never know, but if I ever sell it I'll say it's genuine!

For those perhaps wondering about my given clue of future Hammer, it referred to Peter Cushing appearing in the film playing a small roll of a student. This was during his early film acting period that he had spent working in the U.S.A.
