Thanks David, Nice to see active admin! I thought this might be a great place to get some feedback on the Dirty Harry poster and to see what kind of reactions I get over the asking price. I'll be sure to share more of my collection with the group. I'm not sure if the following has much value but its just one I really like!

  • I am sure Mathias will get a kick out of that one.

As far as your price on the DH - It's in decent condition and if that is what you want to sell it, then go for it.  At auction (not retail) it sold for $3200 in 2013...

Are you selling anything else?  I see some damaged posters that may be worth fixing at the right price.  I also really dig the combo pieces with the OS and stills...

It's 1.000 Cash. Free!!!! in Violent Vision!!!! How could I not love it???
    Forget the Dirty Harry...
    ;)
  • Yes Charlie, I am interested in selling most of my collection, at 40" x 60" I can only display so many :(
I just love allot of the artwork on these old posters - The combo pieces with the stills are really interesting - especially the stills with the Young Frankenstein poster - which sadly was folded during original shipping. Any chance you would share the link to the 2013 auction? - valuating these has been a tedious process lol. And I'm realistic about valuation if I can find comparable sales results - I saw H.A. sold one for $3900 years back and I see a retail site asking almost Ten Thousand - plus they recently sold one they were asking 10k for - might of sold for best offer though, so need to take that into account. Again forums = feedback which helps me create a better understanding of the market - not trying to offend anyone with the price just being cautious because I'm naive to the market.
  • Thanks Charlie! I did see that one previously but kind of wrote it off because of the complete water staining that would need professional restoration which is expensive and slightly risky in knowing what you will end up with.  But i guess everything is relative. Out of respect for the forum if I sell the poster outside of VMPF.com I will update this post with the final sales price for everyone. Or will list it here with buyers permission if sold to a VMPF.com member.

    @ Charlie any reference for the 40 x 60 " Night of Bloody Horror"  marked 69/205 ?

I don't expect it to have much value but because of the illustration it is one of my ten favorite posters I have.
  • Was that retail site by chance Cinemasterpieces?
  • @ CSM I could see why you would think that :)

Can I draw out your associated thoughts with that correlation?

I think $2,750 is a good number for an unrestored good condition copy (as for sale by owner).  EMP took 20% so the consignor only realized $2560 for the one in the link.  You could get it restored for another $500 and might be able to turn it quick for $3,750 FSBO on say eBay or on a forum.  The 20% from EMP provides a dedicated buyer's pool that trust the site implicitly. Don't auction it on eBay...

You may be able to get the $7,500 number of you are willing to have it restored and wait - could take years.  I've consigned a few things to cinemasterpieces.  One sold within 6 months.  The other two took around 18 months... All of those posters were less than $1000 though. But the checks were big even though they take 25% I think... So you can take the risk of investing in restoration and then wait it out for a year or more and get $5600 out of it (maybe).

    Night of Bloody Horror:

Based on the OS prices, I imagine the Night of Bloody Horror is about $80 (auction) - $200 (Retail) in its current condition...

I am interested in the combo (OS/Still) pieces if you want to PM me...
  • @ Charlie, I appreciate you taking time to share that with me. I will definitely take it into consideration moving forward.

Cinemasterpieces is the highest high end of retail (actually it's pretty much over the mountain and coming down the other side to frolic arm-in-arm in the dewy meadow with Posteritati).

This is a magical, pseudo-mythological place where pipedream sales results only come to fruition for Dave "the enlightened yogi poster master" through his exclusive group of cash-throwing-simply-refuse-to-shop-around-anywhere-else-to-compare-prices cohorts.  After all almost all of these posters are investment grade quality and a long, long, looooooooooooong time can go by without finding another of similar investment pedigree

This is a long winded way of saying - Dave's prices are not a good measuring stick of what you can reasonably expect to get for your items (unless of course as Charlie mentioned you decide to consign them to Dave, drink the tasty purple Kool-Aid and play the waiting game...)

  • "Dirty Harry" British Quad with red background
I have two of these posters that I got in the early 1970's along with a rented film for showing at a film show evening of the Post Office Engineers Sport and Social Club. Unfortunately I used Scotch tape around the edges to display them on the walls of the Telephone Exchange where I worked at the time. Worse still, later in the 70's after I had left employment there I decided to remove the tape without proper due care! Consequently both posters have the surface removed all round by the width of the tape used. The film and the posters were supplied by "Screen Services" in the UK and the posters arrived in a packet in folded condition (normal for British Quads).
    My questions are:
    1. Are these red posters not the first issue, as I've seen recently that some with a white background have been sold that have been described as "first issue".
    2. Is it possible to restore the condition of these posters? or does it not matter too much as the paper loss would be covered if they were framed? (I've think I've heard somewhere that film buffs don't care but that collectors do care).
    3. Any idea what they would be worth in this condition?

The "red" posters are considered rereleases while the white posters are considered the first release meaning these were the posters used the first time the movie came out.    I don't have a good history of the films release in the UK.

Yes possible to restore the surface loss - guessing the red is gone...  It does matter depending on the damage.  You might lose half your value in an auction setting.
