Where can I sell my 1960's collection?

I had a theater in the middle 60's.  I have 17 posters I would like to sell from that time.
What is the best approach?

I have the following one sheets (all original):

HARD DAYS NIGHT

STRAIGHT JACKET

7 DAYS IN MAY

CAPT. NEUMAN MD

MAN’S FAVORITE SPORT

A TIGER WALKS

MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (BRANDO)

INCREDIBLE MR. LIMPET

FLIGHT FROM ASHIA

DEAD RINGER

THE CARDINAL

THE VICTORS

WILD AND WONDERFUL

BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI

MCHALE’S NAVY (BORGNINE)

SUMMER MAGIC

WORLD OF HENRY ORIENT

You come to a forum of movie poster collectors, it's a good start. As you've posted the list, post prices, otherwise try eBay.
  • IMO, 2 of them have legs.  The rest are fish wrapping.  People watch pawn stars or antique roadshow and start to think that every poster is worth a gazillion bucks.

You can consign to Bruce at emovieposter.  He will get a better price, but on these posters he will take about 2/3 in consignment fees.

You can try eBay You might get reasonable return, but it is a risky approach with unscrupulous buyers and eBay policy.

You can list prices here and see who might make an offer.  We will be very picky on packing and shipping as we have all been burned with damaged posters in the past.  I'd suggest you try and get an estimate of value first.  Bruce's archive is a good way to start.  Pick an average of recent results, taking condition into account.  For example, the Flight From Ashiya 1 sheet generally sells for $5-7 I assuming a folded poster in VG-F condition and might be willing to go the $7 if I was interested.  I expect you think the collection has a significantly higher value though.
  • Note: The Hard Days Night is trimmed...
  • He'll never be back.

Way off the mark on your above statement. On the WORST posters I would "take about 2/3 in consignment fees". On the best ones 22%. Overall, likely around 40%.

For the vast majority of consignors who have a mixed bag of items, we end up taking around 1/3 of the final selling prices, but because this guy's stuff is worse than average it would likely be a little higher.

And still far under what he would pay at an auction with $19 minimum buyers premiums. But that's a moot point, because they would not accept these (and no other auction would either, if they had to auction them all individually).

And as you said, he likely won't be back. Next stop is probably a bunch of overpriced eBay auctions.

  • Did you look at his list?  Chock full of $10 posters.
  • so Bruce got me curious.  I went and looked at the list as if I were actually interested in bidding.  This would be my max bids on these items

HARD DAYS NIGHT - 200 (assume trimmed, thus fair)

    STRAIGHT JACKET - 20

    7 DAYS IN MAY - 20

CAPT. NEUMAN MD - can't find comparable in DB, but image and title say $10 to me

    MAN’S FAVORITE SPORT - 15

    A TIGER WALKS - $5

MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (BRANDO) - 60

    INCREDIBLE MR. LIMPET - 15

    FLIGHT FROM ASHIA - 7

    DEAD RINGER - 25

    THE CARDINAL - 15

    THE VICTORS - 7

    WILD AND WONDERFUL - 5

BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI - 200

    MCHALE’S NAVY (BORGNINE) - 25

    SUMMER MAGIC - 15

WORLD OF HENRY ORIENT - 8

So, I agree that 2/3 commission was too much, but over half is fair.

  • so are you interested at that price?
  • so are you interested at that price?
If they are your prices you really need to post images, selling movie posters is not a secret.

So, I agree that 2/3 commission was too much, but over half is fair.

You are falling into a trap most people do. When you see a bunch of really low prices (that are at the 66% or 75% rate) and then a few high prices (that are at the 24% or 26% rate) you think "well, put together that should average over half".

But you forget that the cheap stuff all put together doesn't even equal one high priced poster, so it ends up averaging 37% commission to us, 63% to the seller, at the prices you put in above.

    Here is the math:

Total of your listed prices: $652.00
Commission Total (at our posted rates): $243.88
    Consignor Total: $408.12
    Buyers premiums: $0
    Avg Commission Rate: 37%

  • Hey it was almost 3AM - I might be wrong too... He should send them in and we can keep track!
  • I am trying to give the benefit of the doubt and give VG-F ratings since he said they were placed in storage after first showing.

I got those prices by going through Bruce's archives, throwing away the outliers and taking a rough average of the rest, weighing toward recent results.  It would be the same as I would do if I were serious about these posters.

Next, this would be max bids for multiple listings.  I would expect to win many below the max.  I would expect to lose some as well, so my total would be well under $400.  Note the numbers I picked were historical.

Bruce, thanks for the detailed response.  That was most enlightening, and I hadn't considered the price weighing effect.
  • I will get photos.
