Mrs has just left for her sisters wedding in Perth (I'm home alone as we couldn't get a dog sitter.. not that I tried very hard ) so begins my week long binge of war movie classics!
First two up...
WED because it's Clint (with an exceptionally impressive high body count during his top of staircase/end of hallway shootout) and DB's to tie in with the daybill arrival.

Haven't seen Dan Busters?? This turned out to be an original release version where Guy Gibson black Labrador still retains his actual name, changed to Digger in a doctored version I saw last year.
In all honesty I didn't rate 'Sands' as highly as I thought it was from watching many years ago. Don't get me wrong, great use of archive footage which actually blends in quite well, and Wayne always commands a great screen presence, it's just the additional comedy with the brothers that always fight and John Wayne's dancing/bayonet training etc. was a bit cheesy to say the least.
Todays 'Paths' and 'Departure' were much better and very much as dramatic and well acted as I recall.
I haven't seen much paper/material for Departure and although I love the 'Paths' one sheet that Mark linen backed the other day, the UK quad is really something quite special and assume that either Paul or Matt have knocked that one off?
Departure is still a daybill I'm after. Sands, I don't mind because Wayne isn't so gung ho from start to finish. Same reason why I like Sea Chase. Yeah the dancing bayonet scene was cheesy. I think I have Battleground on DVD. What was it like Wil?
Watching Seven. I remember watching it several years ago and turned it off because Pitts acting was second rate in the first half. It's better in the second half. Maybe I was tired that night.

Not that bad, better than Sands I'd say. Not a lot of fighting, but ticks off a fair few historical points from the real siege of Bastogne. In all pretty good.

Band of Brothers does a good job with Bastogne. And in general, a very good series. Few posters around, but i'd like to get a few some day.
Dam Busters. Crappy shows on Aussie free to air right now. Watched a Doco on Guy Martin rebuilding the Spitfire just recently. Production and millimetre precision is insane.
Absolutely amazing how much fortitude the Brits had in the 40s and ingenuity.

Seen the same doco on Netflix Matt, you're not wrong about the precision, leaps and bounds beyond the technology of the First World War, that said if you watch his other doco on the last Vulcan Bomber it baffles you even more how fast aircraft technology moved over the years, from the glider of the wright brothers to space travel in a matter of years... I don't think any other human achievement has advanced so fast? Obviously Wars help drive the need for speedy technological breakthroughs.
Funny, I watched a different doco on the Vulcan bomber used in the Falklands war just recently. By that time the bombing technology looked WW2 but they flew the longest bombing raid ever recorded. They had 11 refuelling tankers for two Vulcans, all done midair. I didn't all go to plan though.

Funnily enough I watched a doco on the Falklands war yesterday. More so a broad overview of start to finish than individual actions, but a good reminder of how many Royal Navy ships were lost in a matter of days, plus one rather large Argentine cruiser The General Belgrano (former Pearl Harbour survivor USS Phoenix).
Prison movies.. shawshank redemption (caught 20mins on tv now i have to watch it..again) and cool hand luke (just saw jay leno interview paul in 2005. He was 80 then, still looking grea, humble bloke, sharp as a tack, in part 2 of the interview he races a go kart around the nbc studio!!)

I know they refer to it as an epic, but that really is short for 'one bloody long movie' at 2:46 was probably an hour longer than it needed to be.
Still, Jean Simmons was in it.
