The poster origin of the Ben Hur poster has been discussed over many years with some different views regarding what type of poster it is. To me it is certainly. a rare horizontal daybill. Curious to hear if others do agree with me or n
It would be great to hear any other comments regarding this Ben Hur poster..
  • Poster size thoughts and comments certainly are hard to come by regarding the Ben Hur poster size being discussed.. For the record I believe it is definitely a horizontal size daybill poster.

Agree or disagree? Love to hear your thoughts.

  • I don't know of any other posters that measured 15x40, so yes, that does seem to make it much more likely.

But why so incredibly few horizontal ones, and from very different times?

In the U.S. experiments like changing size usually occurred over a short time, and then were abandoned.

Thanks for your comments Bruce. I will re-introduce next an earlier thread from July 2018 titled Rare Horizontal Style Daybills that talks about the horizonal daybill subject as well that you may find to be of interest.

Could it be because most display cases outside cinemas were designed for vertical posters and the occasional horizontal poster would have to be displayed in a special way? I imagine the horizontal posters would have been less popular for that reason alone.

  • Yes, Ben Hur is a horizontal daybill. Ir was the biggest publicised movie to that time in cinema history, so expect extra special advertising. I don't think a press sheet exists but I figure there would have been multiple daybill designs.

I agree with your thinking that supports my belief. 100% convinced that it is indeed a daybill printed poster. Multiple designed daybills with up to at least four different designs are known to have been printed. The following What Price Glory film from 1927 had four different daybill designs printed for it as seen following below.

  • As appears on original U.S.A. film poster artwork, who is this?
  • It would be great to have someone comment on the above image,
  • My only thought is Zsa Zsa Gabor, which shows how much I know!

It isn't Zsa Zsa Gabor, bot i do appreciate you having a go.
  • With that hair style it looks 1960s, a decade which had hordes of beauties to choose from. My guess Virna Lisi.

Sorry, but not her. Thanks for participating  though. Some clues are that the actress is from Europe and the artwork is early 1960's, produced for a late released 1950's film. I was anticipating a certain actresses name, although incorrect to be given.
  • Brigitte Bardot?

    Peter
  • 1950s - ok then, my more confident guess is Mylene Demongeot.

Goos guess, but it isn't her.
  • Brigitte Bardot?
Certainly looks like her, but the poster artist was attempting to deceive people inro thinking that it was her when it actually wasn't her. I'll leave it open a little longer .to see if anyone can come up with the identity of the actress who actually appeared in the film that the poster was advertising.
  •
The actress in question being queried, and an image from a foreign film poster of the film displaying a more realistic presentation of what the actress looked like.
  • And here's another image of her from a later Blake Films release...

    Peter
  • Since the hair colour has now changed (and the goal posts) the depiction in the poster resembles Sylvia Koscina. If it's anyone more obscure than her, good luck!
  • It isn't Sylvia Koscina I have to report. I do suspect that no one is going to identity who the actress is. If this does turn out to be the case, I will reveal the answer tomorrow, You will most likely be surprised as to who the actress is who was cunningly drawn to resemble Brigitte Bardot.
  • Just stumbled upon who it is...and why she was drawn to resemble Brigitte Bardot, but I'll leave it up to you to explain who it is. The cunning powers of marketing!

    Peter
  • There was an Italian and French co-production originally released under the title of Il Pirata Dello Sparviero Nero in 1958. The film starred  Mijanou Bardot the younger little known sister of Brigitte Bardot. When the film was released in the U.S.A. in 1961 under the Englidh title of The Pirate Of The Black Hawk by Roger Corman's The Filmgroup some devious advertising was used on the following one sheet.  BARDOT  in bold lettering and an image of Brigitte Bardot appearing in the centre of the poster. Towards the bottom of the poster the credit of starring Mijanou BARDOT  does appear though..

A scene from the film  and original foreign poster advertising below clearly shows Mijanou 's image was substituted on the U.S. poster with her then famous sister Brigitte to hoodwink some people in thinking it was Brigitte starring in the film.

I am so pleased that you got to work out who the actress was supposed to be, and for the dirty deeds performed with the poster presentation..
  • I was doing searches for Brigitte Bardot and found her sister, that's hilarious that they had the audacity to do it.

    Peter

  • Mijanou and her sister Brigitte.
  • Did Mijanou have much of a career?

    Peter
  • Did Mijanou have much of a career?
She made nine films between 1956 and 1968 when she retired, but apparently wasn't comfortable acting.  She was also a writer and also a businesswoman in the U.S.A. where she now resides.
