Mad Max : Fury Road / The Cars That Ate Paris Spikey Cars

 Anyone know if there is a the story behind the alteration of the spikey car from The Cars That Ate Paris  ( aka The Cars That Ate People ) from 1974 to those appearing in Mad Max Z : Fury Road ? If something was written about it I missed it. Was it just an homage to Peter Weir's film or is  there is a story with more to it than that ? Please let me know on way or the other.

Just found the following interesting information. The spikes on the Mad Max: Fury Road spikey sand cars number the same as the Australian anteater quills, totaling 1,757, that were the number being on anteaters found in the region where the first films were shot.
