  • After a lot of back and forth (slight understatement), I finally picked these 4 up today, so thought I'd add some better images.

    The Falcon In Danger (1943)

    Shanghai Gesture (1942)

    Coastal Command (1943)

And what I originally went in for.

    Dunkirk (1958)

  • Beautiful aussie paper...and glad you finally managed to wrangle them free!

Thanks Ves, if I wrangled any harder I think Shanghai and Coastal would have fallen apart!  :s
  • Lovely daybills Will, well done !
  • Falcon is nice Wil, but Coastal Command is my favorite among a wonderful foursome!
  • Thanks Sven/Mark, Really happy with Shanghai & Coast Command and I'm guessing Dario is my best bet at making those two 'pop' again.

    Maybe.... =)
    im kidding! I'm kidding!.... ;)
Dario is the best! Can't think of anyone else I'd send a valuable/important piece. He's not the Restoration Yoda for nothing!
  • Hey I just noticed the covered tag line on Shanghai!
"Where almost anything can happen, and does"! Another for the censors @Hondo !
  • I want to thank Ves for helping me get this one from "random guy and girlfriend" in Australia to Texas:

    National Velvet AUS OS

    Untitled

Also got my Thunderbolt and Lightfoot Quad  from Ben (allaboutmovieposters) in the same package...

    Untitled
  • This one came in too a while back already linenbacked (to my surprise):

Love in the Afternoon RR French Half Grande (31.5 x 47.2 inches)

    Untitled
  • Love them Charlie! Never seen the thunderbolt quad before. Its a beauty and in great condition.
  • National Velvet is nice! Should clean up nicely! Ariana adds very nicely to your Audrey collection!

Oh yeah!  Forgot about them!  Now that was one weird poster purchase experience!
It definately ended up in the right home.  Can't wait to see it all fixed up!
  • Great pickups Charlie and Wil. Especially likey the war daybills.
  • That Ariane is one of those times when black and white + red goes perfectly well together. Good one Charlie
  • Looks like all the copies were censored in that way!
Interesting that Wil's copy retained the Aussie censor rating, but Chris' did not...

  • Looking at all the Shanghai Gesture Australian newspaper ad blocks with taglines such as ''The city of sin'' and ''Where women are weak and men are ruthless!'' being freely used, the milder ''Where almost anything can happen ... and dies! tagline, which was deleted on the three daybills with both Australian and New Zealand ratings on them, would have been all altered in New Zealand.

So somewhere out there there'll be a non NZ version of this with uncensored text and the Aussie rating?

I believe one existed, but is there a copy that survived to this day, that is the question? Not a good period for saved posters though, particularly United Artists daybills, but one never knows.
  • Which raises a question...as it's part of the posters history, would you get it removed if you could????
  • It's just strange how both Aussie rating and no Aussie rating both have it censored out. Surely by rights there should have just been the printed for NZ use (Chris's version) and my circular Aussie decal version (minus the censorship?)

My thoughts are both the Australian and New Zealand versions ended up in New Zealand. Perhaps the Australian version was sent in error as well, or least likely, sent after they ran out of the N.Z. version. I must say that once an Australian daybill artwork was passed by the Australian censor and the approved art work printed it was never later crudely crossed out.
  • Very strange then that they didn't also delete the Aussie rating when they added the NZ wording below the censored text.

An oversight or close enough to their rating in their thinking to leave it, or they didn't want to make the poster look even more unattractive than it already was with the deleted taglines.
  • Fantastic - I could not make out what was censored on my copy but Wil's reveals the tagline!
  • International Moonraker 1S from Spaghetti World

Myself, well this beauty finally landed on my doorstep 5 minutes ago! The repeatedly opened/resealed tube didn't fill me with joy, but thankfully the force is strong with my Star Wars 3 Sheet thanks to Studio C!
    Beautiful 3-sheet. :)
  • Image may contain 2 people people smiling Quite nice art of Marilyn
