Hi Mark how do you cut the linen to size without the linen fraying? Ive used a sharp stanley knife before and the linen s frayed. A picture of the tool you use would be great! Thanks.
But my first question would be what is the "linen" you are cutting. I use unprimmed 12oz cotton duck I buy from Jerry's Artarama and the quality is much better than the "linen" that was used for the only backed poster's i received from Poster Conservation in Stamford, Conn.

My 2cents: You use a brand new shiny razor blade with a steel edged ruler... I’ve never had the linen fray.
Nice copy of Robin and the 7 Hoods I backed yesterday. Only resto needed will be a small piece of paper that was loose on the upper left border, otherwise it’ll be all set!

Finally finished a recent DB. Pre-wash. No real major issues bits of paper loose here or there, some toning to paper, otherwise looking good.
After a deacid bath, mild bleaching to came out well. It had a small area on Hope’s face that would need some color infill. Minor pencils on the fold lines also. Watercolor pencils filled in the small areas needing attention and it turned out a peach! *Two down in the Hope/Richardson Linenbacking Project-3 more to go!
Up next, Robin/7 Hoods! this poster came to me in sweet shape with only a small piece of border paper loose on the upper left edge. Only real work to be done will be sime papwr replacement.
Also made some progress on the missing-in-action poster. *while the fold lines were filled in easy enough, it had some missing paper areas too small for paper replacement. So a compound was mixed to infill, then sanded down and to be painted. Some of the infill areas to be cleared of powder then sanded smooth, then painting. And the all important pistol! More to follow....hopefully in the next 3 months....
So the powder is the paper infill? I thought paper infills would be a wet and mushy pastes? Thanks!
Thanks guys! The infill compound is actually a “jelly†like mixture using Methylcellulose. Bad photo but you get the idea....
Then a “powdery†substance, Cellulose powder is added on top, you can pay it down a bit but not always necessary-let it dry for at least 24 hours so the powder absorbs into the MC and dries hard. Then use 600 grit sandpaper and a razor blade if needed to clean up, smooth down the dried/hardened MC/Cellulose in order to paint over. In the above photo I should have used a piece of paper to infill, on the edges.
I’ll take some photos when I paper infill Robin/7 Hoods.

Will post a picture later tonight.

And like Charlie, use a 4ft steel edge ruler to make a straight line-I just make small pencil marks at an inch to leave that much masa.
Hey @Charlie-I finally got a Teflon bone folder! Nice!
