Ok, that does it.  Backstage 1937. Another I've never heard of.

Yes it is. I thought someone would get to answer it once the clues were re-examined following the Sunny poster design being added to the thread.
Actually, it wasn't nearly that easy.  Going to IMDB with her name got me a list of 42 films.  However, many of them, including Backstage didn't have any images.  Doing a google search for 'Anna Neagle' just got a lot of head shots.  The search that paid off was 'Anna Neagle movie poster images'

Google search is a tool, but often it is less than magic and needs some fooling around to get the results you need.

  • Some good persistant investigative work is often reqired. Good work Jay.

     information for # 35.

Limelight aka Backstage was released in Australia in 1936 under the title of Street Singer's Serenade.

     ( Trove )

A newspaper article promotinng screenings of Street Singer's Serenade in Perth WA in September1936. The film was also released in New Zeand with the Street Singer's Serenade title also in 1936.

It would appear that from the above advance publicity publised in Great Britain in 1936 that the film was titled Street Singer's Serenade. It was changed possibly at the last minute to Limelight when released  in G.B. I Am thinking it was most likely too late in Australia and New Zealand to change the film's title.

  •  38

     39

Two more images to tackle. I will rest my contributions to this quiz for a period of time after these two images are hopefully answered.

I will replace this quiz involement in the future with the previously popular Actresses Legs Qui.z

  • Number 38 clue is that another film of the same name was filmed and released ten years later. The style of outfits that are worn by the two pictured leads in the image should help also.

39 clue is that this film was released in the1940s by Universal Pictures.

  • Seeing no responses received I will reveal that the answer for 38 is No, No, Nanette ( 1930 ) and for 39 it is Babes On Swing Street ( 1944 ).

That's all for the time being. See you later on with Actresses Legs Quiz.
  •   40 41
     42
     43

Back again with this Musical Film quiz that has proved popular in the past. I thought we need something else a little on the brighter side. Let's see then how you go with this selection of images from the 1930s and the 1950s.

Correct and well done Bruce. I had thought this image would be one ot the harder ones in this grouping to identify.

    40 clue is legs.

41 clue is a big time producer involved.

42 clue is a remake of an earlier 1930's musical. I almost didn't include this one as I thought it would be too easy to identify.

42 would be "Rose Marie" 1954 version

    Peter
  • 42 would be "Rose Marie" 1954 version

Correct. A remake of the 1936 version of Rose Marie that had starred Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy.

There was also a silent version released in 1928 that starred a young Joan Crawford. This version is now believed to be lost.

  • 40 is the 1938 Goldyn Follies

Correct  and well spotted. A little confusion though with the number of the image, which is 41 and not 40. Sorry It looks like I made things a little misleading with my placing of the numbering of the clues images.

The actress / dancer featured above is Vera Zerina, who was billed solely as Zorina.

My legs clue was referring to the yet unanswered image that was situated above the legs clue.

     40

  • That is three for the show (1955).  I actually have that lobby
  • jayn_j said:

    Correct again.

The full lobby image above. My clue of legs of course referred to those of Betty Grable.

Grable's legs were insured by her studio for $1 million as a publicity stunt
  •   44  45

Two more images for films released many decades apart
  • 45 is the lobby card border art for The Broadway Melody (1929)

It certainly is the film in question, which is of course is one of the earliest sound musicals.   ( IMDb )
  • Is 44 Summer Holiday?

It is Summer Holiday (1963 ) Bruce, and well spotted. I viewed the film recently and was a little disappointed overall with the film, especially with the intended to be humorous scenes.

  •  46  47                                                                    48  49

Something a little different this time around. These next four isolated images are from scenes from well known musical films that originally featured one of the stars of the films in each of the scenes from the films.

I cannot make up my mind if these images will be able to be answered or not. I'll just have to wait to see how this different approach pans out.

  • Got 3 of them.
I agree they are a list musicals.  Couldn't  find 48 though.

    I will do 49 - Jupiter's  Darling (1955) with Esther Williams

Correct. Well done in recognising three out of the four. I had originally  thought that # 49 would be the most difficult of the four to name.

Three images still there to test you. Does anyone else know any of them, and if so the like to provide some answers?
  • 46 An American in Paris.

I wanna say King and I for 48 but not sure
  • 46 An American in Paris.

I wanna say King and I for 48 but not sure
I was thinking the same for those two.

    Peter
  • 46 An American in Paris.

I was thinking the same for those two.

for 46, Have a closer look at the numbering of the image.

An understandable attempt at answering number 48, but unfortunately it isn't the correct answer. This film to be identified wasn't set in Asia if that helps.

    46 is Funny Face
47 is an American In Paris?

    Peter
  • 46 is Funny Face
47 is an American In Paris?

Correct and well spotted. Funny Face from 1957 and An American In Paris from 1951.

A well done to Ves for being the first in naming An American In Paris, but with the image number incorrectly quoted. I knew which image Ves was referring to though.

  •    48

Does this help in any way?

  • O.k., as image 48 appears to have stumped everyone, I will now reveal the answer to be Daddy Long Legs ( 1955 ). I had thought this image may have been a difficult one, but decided to include it anyway as one never knows. I recommend you check out the dance sequence available to view on www.youtube.com .
