Dating the Kind Hearts and Coronets Daybill

This (partial) daybill is dated 1949

As is this:

Firstly both dates are wrong - the movie wasn't released in Australia until 1950

Secondly, one can quickly tell with the first poster the Alec Guinness is getting a push, yet only is ranked fourth on the billings on the second. As the film was just Guiness' 3rd credited cinema role it is obvious he would not be bannered on the second poster as he is on the first.

The film opened in 1950 and was very popular enjoying a 'long run' in the main centres. I feel the first poster above was a re-release for the run in 1953/54.

For the film Guiness received a National Board of Review Award for Best Actor and was Nominated, New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of The Duke, The Banker, The Parson, The General, The Admiral, Young D'Ascoyne, Young Henry, and Lady Agatha...yes he played eight parts!

My curiosity was piqued when I opened a 1SH for the title which on investigation bears a strong resemblance to the poster at the top along with that tradional yellow of a lot of 50s Aussie posters. The 1SH is by A Chromo Print Litho - the second daybill above is by W.E Smith (and in keeping with their style).

Comments

  • Any chance of posting an image of the Chromo Print Australian one sheet?

  • As you can see Guinness is the headline on this poster (AU1SH)

  • Thanks for the one sheet image. I believe the daybill poster with the yellow background and the one sheet just posted  are from a late1950's re-release

My reason being Chromo Print only started printing Australian daybill and Australian one sheets in 1957 through to very early 1960, plus I know it was released in Newcasle in the late 1950's.I'm fairly confident a 1953 / 1954 re-release one sheet would have been printed by W.E.Smith and an official 1953 re-release would have been too soon after the original release.

  • The film ran in  most main centres from the year of it's release every year until 1956 - I can find no evidence it played anywhere in 1957 and there a re-release (revival) in Canberra in 1958. (revival).

Information  on Trove after 1954 is scant. I know it was re-released in Newcastle at the Lyric theatre and played for a week in the late 1950's .Again I doubt the poster was printed by Chromo Print prior to 1957 as I have sighted nearing a hundred images of Chromo Print daybills and one sheets and not one is from earlier than 1957.

We will have to agree to disagree.

  • Where did I disagree?

If you read carefully all I was doing was backing up up your statement that the film had a re-release (revival) in the late '50s (1958) - the other information was about how long the run was in general from its original release.

As to Chromo Print print period - I simply don't know any different to disagree.

As in your previous posting to me in the Hand Painted ( over ) thread I will say in your words  ''I misread your post''. Sorry about that.
