Dating Hitchcock's Rope Re-issue Daybill

image

This re-issue Australian daybill poster that Ves posted on another thread is commonly referred to as being from an Australian 1958 re-release. I firmly believe this not to be the case. What are the thoughts of the members? Is it 1958 as Bruce has described  or 1959 that has been also mentioned as the Australian re-release date or is it a different year altogether that is a completely different one, as I believe it to b, and is so what year?

  • Forgive me asking here, but I looked around and couldn't find it anywhere.

Is there a thread that discusses the changing logo's for studios over the years?

  • No, feel free to start one
  • Great!  Another thing to add to the list of stuff to do!

When I get a chance, will start by organizing and sorting the logo's on the long daybills...got to start somewhere.

  • Excellent- can't wait for it.You'll learn a lot on the identifying release dates but be warned there is a long long road ahead.

  • Anyone want to voice an opinion as to when they believe the re-release date was ?

1961 - only because of all the Robert Burtons I've come across are early 1960's...Wild guess though
  • Thanks for your wild guess Sven. Much appreciated.

  • One of the reasons that dealers have dated the Rope daybill as approx. 1959 is that the artwork is the same as the 1950s release US and other posters. If you think it might be another date please let us know.

  • I will provide a detailed answer as to the re-release date and my reasons for thinking it so shortly. Before I do so any other thoughts from anyone else on when the date was?

    Hondo

  • Doesn't look like anyone else has any thoughts on this so over to you Hondo!
  • Coming soon.

NOW SHOWING  NOW SHOWING  NOW SHOWING -  ROPE -  NOW  SHOWING  NOW SHOWING  NOW SHOWING

If you check out the eMpvieposter.com site and check out Rope it will be a confusing experience with the information shown in the '' Important Added Info.'' section along with all the similar looking designed re-issue posters from various countries  being mainly credited as 1958 RR but two as 1963RR and one 1963RR.There are two Mexican lobby cards credited as being R58 when they are clearly mid to late 1960's RR due to the MGM logo that only started being used on film posters from the mid 1960's onwards. There are 8 Belgian posters all of the same design with MGM on the poster. Apart from the 8 there is another size poster credited as original ( which it is ) with WB on it. Now let's look at the 8 same MGM posters. One is credited as most likely 1950's RR when clearly it isn't .2 are marked as 1958RR and again clearly are not and the remaining 5 are shown as 1958RR.

Enough of the confusion with the foreign re-release dates let's get to the Australian re-release .I firmly believe the Australian re-release date was in 1964 for the following reasons ----------

    The reasons it isn't 1958 are --

All MGM product in 1958 was printed by Chromo Print. and the poster in question was printed by Robert Burton who only commenced printing MGM daybills in 1962 after a few years of A. & C. printing being the preferred printer.

Nothing at all found in Australian newspaper advertisements and records that are available for a re-release of Rope in the years 1958 through to1963.

The reason why it is 1964 ----------

Rope advertisements were found for screenings in Canberra, A.C.T, Queanbeyan, N.S.W. & Bourke, N.S.W. in 1964.

I believe I have proved why it was a 1964 RR and not 1958 so hopefully all agree with my findings.

  • Seems reasonable to me. It seems that there are quite a lot of full colour daybills from that era that are actually re releases.
  • See, I knew that cataloguing the logos would be a worthwhile venture.

All very interesting and seems more than reasonable to me.

    Thank you!

FINAL PROOF OF AUSTRALIAN RE-RELEASE OF ROPE.

I now have conclusive proof that Rope was first re-released in Sydney, N.S.W. on August 7, 1963 by M-G-M and not 1964 as was previously stated as the re-release year. The year 1964 had been based on information obtained from the only newspaper advertisements found as Capitol city information apart from the A.C.T.  wasn't available for this period. A.C.T. and other country areas had screenings the following year after the Sydney re-release took place. This new information was obtained  from The Film Weekly Motion Picture Directory 1964-65.

  • Cool...so my daybill is now 1 year younger than I thought :)
  • Original posters for Rope have the Warner Brothers logo - reissues have the MGM details.

The original U.K.release  was the exception. MGM released the film there. I have read this plus is backed up by original MGM U.K. front of house cards in the auction hiistory section of EMoovieposter.com.
  • Interesting that the British FOH cards were MGM. The daybill has the Warner Brothers logo and is printed by Victory.

Wikipedia says WB ( U.S.A. ) & MGM ( Europe ). As usual Wikipedia isn't always accurate. I have checked all the posters on Bruce's sight  and apart from the U.K. for all the other numerous countries in Europe plus Argentina as well as Australia WB was the original distributor. If one looks in the IMDB website and checks out Rope and the distributor section the film is credited as being released by MGM in 1948  in the U.K.
