Picnic at Hanging Rock

One printed by MAPS one by Burton. Which came first?

Comments

  • OH LAWD NO!  PLEASE!
  • No idea, both look the same to me so if buying I'd be happy with either.

  • Burton usually seem to be the follow up act, so if I had to guess I'd the M.A.P.S would be first. That said, usually the Burton follow ups would be single colour, not an almost exact duplicate.

The same argument extends to the Jaws 2 daybills - both all but identical yet one M.A.P.S and one Burton.
  • A question. There is an Australian one sheet printed by MAPS and I'm not inclined after a long hard day to check myself if there is a similar style one sheet printed by Robert Burton or any other printer? The Ronin Films one doesn't count as it is a re-issue.
  • Wasn't there something about one being release by BEF and the other not, and depending on which, means it was the true first release

Do I have to try and dig up my notes?

  • Both are almost identical and both are minus the BEF credit.
  • They are actually slightly different sizes and the colours are sharper on the MAPS version. There is also a printing flaw on the Burton daybills that goes through the shoulder area of Anne Lambert's shoulder and across the poster. Maybe that has something to do with the two different printings. Both appear to be original and the reason why there were two different printings could be one of those unsolved mysteries.
  • When I mentioned almost identical I was only referring to the design and not the size, colour and flaws. I believe they are both from the original release and as you say John they could remain an unsolved mystery. As I have mentioned previously  there are countless examples from the 1970s and 1980s in particular where the same daybill designs have been printed by two different printers with combinations of printers including MAPS, Robert Burton, W. & B. Litho ( rare ) and posters with no printers credits and possibly others as well. There are too many examples for re-release to figure into the picture and films went to television very quickly so first release for two printer's designs seems correct. We will probably never know for certain which one came first so let's just say  both  Picnic At Hanging Rock daybills are original although it was probably MAPS first.
  • Yes, they are essentially identical. I just wonder if the printing flaw might have been a reason for the other printing.

Could have possibly been in this case. If the flaw is on the Burton one then it would have been printed first one would think.
  • I have only been able to find numerous MAPS one sheets printed for Picnic At Hanging Rock. Has anyone seen another poster printed by a different printer?
