Sniping!

Man, I hate, hate, HATE snipers on auctions! I had a bid on eBay for like, the past 4 days with a nice little bit of padding past the initial opening bid only to have someone bid with 3 seconds left - too late for me to offer a counter bid. WHICH I WOULD HAVE DONE!! Are you reading this sellers? Snipers are not only p*ssing off your customers but are costing you money!

So annoyed right now!!

  • i regularly have the same problem. I don't use snipe but often have a good buffer with a few seconds, only to be wiped out
  • Better learn how to play the game to win...  I bid if I don't care.  Snipe if I want to win...
  • It's like complaining that you hate being beaten by a V8, yet you drive a Model T. I use it on eBay, I did use it on Heritage until they brought in live Sunday auctions, and have used it on Movie Poster Exchange.

Even the playing field, I'm with Charlie, snipe to win.
  • Maybe I am a Model T...I think I like that idea. New avatar pic coming up!

I prefer the gentler age of poster collecting, when you could browse and negotiate. You can keep your V8s and your slam, bam, bot bidding!

You are only going to win with Snipe if you put a bid high enough. If your bid is high enough without Snipe you'll still win. So the answer here is don't be such tight-arses..

As you get older (like me) you will realise. there's far too many posters out there to buy, and another will be along shortly. So I bid sensibly, if I win great, if not I'll get the next one...  So I can be, and are a tight-arsed Yorkshireman, who pays only what he wants for a poster..

    You Grass-hoppers will learn.. ;)
  • Totally agree with Paul on this one.

If you bid (snipe) with what you are prepared to pay then what's the difference whether you win or lose? The difference is I pay what I want (just like you) and don't have to get up at 3am to ensure I can bid live.
  • I'm with Paul and David on this. When there's a poster I NEED, I always bid the highest amount I am willing to pay (hell, maybe even a little more just to be sure). If I don't win, fuck it, I couldn't afford it. If I do, great. If there's something I like, but not necesarily need, I just throw and early bid and hope for the best. I do always bid manually, but just out of paranoia. I would be very pissed if my bid through a sniping program didn't go through...
  • Agree agree agree...if you bid what you are prepared to pay, win or lose, what is the difference...if you win, yay for you...you got it at a price you are happy with.  If you lose, it was more than you were willing to spend right?  I've found you only get pissed because you thought you could steal it for a pittance...but it didn't quite work out for you.  I think we've all been there, done that :)

I definitely snipe.  For many reasons, but the main one is I've forgotten way too many auctions over my collecting days not to do it.

  • My theory is that the lower the price is at the time someone else decides to snipes can be an advantage.  If the price is up before a buyer decides to snipe he/she may place a higher snipe.  If there are no bids, then the buyer might throw in a lower snipe or bid at the last minute.  The key is to stick what you would pay for it no matter what other bid may come in.
  • 3am..??   I've never stayed up to bid on a poster in my life, they just aren't worth losing sleep over....  Stick your bid on and snooze.. B) it will all come good.

Exactly and I do. It's called Gavel Snipe.  ;)
  • I know, but if I've put a bid on of say 300, but it only shows as 50, and you have snipped at 200, all I can say is thanks for trying come again..... =)
