There Are Quizzes And There Are Quizzes.

I have become very frustrated of late. I have within the late few months introduced eight quizzes, Some will say too many and they are probably right. With my quizzes I try to challenge members and not post images that everybody , or almost everybody knows the answers to. There is room for all types of quizzes and I would never knock any film related quizzes but I tried with my quizzes to encourage members to do some investigative work and use their skills and not be given everything to them on a plate. Some of the questions are hard but some are easy as well. My sourcing for the images was mainly Australian daybills but that shouldn't have stopped members from outside Australia becoming involved in the quizzes as the images are similar to U.S. inserts and other U.S. posters. What has disappointed me of late isn't the non answering side  of things but the lack of people even bothering to view the quizzes at all. Overall there is a lot of varied material posted on the site and all though I am not interested in a lot of what is posted I try and do the right thing being a member in trying to at least view as much material as I can. I am the type of person who puts a lot of work into film related subjects and am very passionate about every thing I do and when it seems like there is an overall lack of interest happening I would like to know why? Are the images too hard or too old or what ?  I would love to know. Any feedback will be appreciated. I have ceased working on the eight quizzes and having an indefinite break at present. I am not having a go at anyone but only trying to work out what brought my quizzes, and in some cases ( Sci-Fi & Horror ) performing extremely well,  down to what appears to me as almost a  lack of interest being shown by members of late. I wish to personally thank Ves for her continued support of the quizzes along with a number of others who will know who they are. I would like to reintroduce some of the quizzes sometime but before I would do this I will need to find out how to fine tune and alter my quizzes to attract participants.

  • Here is why my participation has dwindled.  Two things and it may just be me:

Your quizzes require a lot of time.  They aren't pop in and pop out (for me at least). When you first started posting them, I would spend 45 to an hour just to participate. One day almost 3 hours.  I simply don't always have that kind of time.  I pop in and out.  Every once in a while when I have that time block and nothing else to do sure.  But when there are 8-15 quizzes I just give up.

The second is that when I do have time, I am in the car or laying around watching TV or at my daughter's practices.  I am on on an iphone and trying to go back and forth searching for stuff is tedious and just not fun.

  • Lawrence, I enjoy a good poster image quiz. But for me a couple things: I am typically very busy and have limited time to log on to view posts, there are a lot of quizzes at one time, and third, the majority (it seems like all, are from Australian Daybills) and i am unfamiliar with their origins.

I would consider myself to be a novice regarding poster images so my participation is at best limited. If the images were from US posters, maybe half, and from popular titles, I might have a better chance to get some right. This is of course my perspective. All the best,
    Mark
  • Thanks Charlie and Mark for your thoughts. Much appreciated.
  • It's all about volume Lawrence, 8 on the go, essentially the same type of quiz just a different genre is probably too much. Maybe concentrate on two at anyone time, perhaps one being a genre based one and the other something else left of centre.

And whilst our Northern Hemisphere cousins don't always understand the fascination with the Daybill, you probably attract more flies if you brought them on board - perhaps a head to head name the film based on images from a daybill and a US poster.
  • Good advice.
  • An update on my thoughts regarding my quizzes. These days I rarely, if at all, use any daybill or any other Australian images in my quizzes. Currently I am running only one quiz and that being the Actresses legs quiz. This quiz is being supported by only a limited number of keen people who are very appreciated. Some members who participated in the past no longer do, so this leads me to ponder why ? The usage of daybill material can no longer be a reason why only a few people respond these days, and why once interested people have ceased dong so. My multiple quizzes overexposure  no longer holds  up as being a time consumer. The Actresses quiz question images are clearer and larger in size to help. If anyone doesn't know the answer I provide clues. and often very helpful ones, but usually to no effect. I am wondering if anyone is still interested, apart from those few I mentioned  earlier, and they know who they are? Are some members even looking at the quiz these days? As all previous advice was implemented, I am curious to hear from anyone regarding anything that I have raised today ?
  • It is as a few have said, time. I work full time, and have no computer access at work, my time is therefore limited when I get home, and I have research for posters I'm collecting, and I get a fair few emails asking me stuff about British posters.  In amongst this I also search for new stuff to buy, so I am quite swift in most forums...

Plus the ones I looked at seemed mostly geared up for Aussie posters. That never bothers me, as I do consider this an Aussie site. I always thought things were going along fine with them, don't forget this is just a quick distraction from life.

  • Thanks Paul for my one and only reply. I understand your position. The only thing I will comment on though is that you mentioned in regard to the quizzes being '' geared for Australian posters'', applied a couple of years ago but this hasn't been the case now for years.

Now to sum things up in general. I should have known my recent posing here would turn out to be almost fruitless. One reply and only eleven views to date, confirms to me the little interest in anything quiz related that I post. At this stage of my life if something doesn't make me happy anymore I don't continue doing it, so  I say goodbye to all of my quizzes.

I share your frustration. I post things I feel are interesting, and there are few views and few comments. I wonder if either:

    1) All the subjects worth discussing have been discussed

    or

    2) If this is more a place where poster collectors meet to talk about general subjects than a forum to discuss movie posters

I note that the other online forums are similar, with few replies to any comment or image, and most of the discussion centers around current events or gossip.

I don't know what any of this means, just giving my opinion!
HAS lifetime guarantees on every item - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS unrestored and unenhanced images - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS 100% honest condition descriptions - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS auctions where the winner is the higher of two real bidders - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS up to SIXTEEN weeks of "Pay and Hold" to save a fortune on shipping - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS real customer service before, during and after EVERY auction, and answers all questions - IS eMoviePoster.com

HAS 25% or 26% "buyers premiums" of any kind (but especially the dreadful "$29 or $49 minimum" ones) - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS "reserves or starts over $1 - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS hidden bidder IDs - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS "nosebleed" shipping charges - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS inadequate packaging - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS no customer service to speak of, before, during and after any auction, and answers almost no questions - NOT eMoviePoster.com

  • I think this is a general statement of most forums.  80% of the comments come from just a few members.  Most are just here for the pretty pictures.
  • I enjoy reading most of what is posted, quizzes, new information about posters and collecting I haven't heard before, looking at what people have bought, or how they display...as Jay said the pretty pictures.

But I think as has been said before, sometimes life gets hectic and you only have a couple of minutes to sit in front of the PC, and more importantly, if I don't feel I have anything of real value to contribute to the discussion, I usually won't reply.  Doesn't mean I didn't read or enjoy the post...

Everyone has different tastes, and we aren't all going to like or enjoy the same things, but I think it is fair to say most the people on this forum at least, appreciate the varying contribution of everyone.  So, I for one, hope everyone keeps posting.  But please do not be offended or put off if I don't always reply or contribute to your threads, as I am not when I post and people don't respond in kind.  It's life :)

  • Maybe we should learn to use the like button more frequently.  A less committed way of saying you read the post and approved.
