I have a ton of other cool posters, so it is well worth checking out. I hope to have a preview of Part I up Tuesday or Wednesday, but no guarantees.

What dummy scheduled this for right after U.S.'s Thanksgiving, anyway? =)

Different one to the original one you thinking of
  • That one in Part II is a re-release from the late 1950s to the early 1960s.

We believe the "other one" is from 1955.

The original comment I made was to reinforce my opinion that any U.K. posters without London Films on them and Lion International appearing instead are not original release posters from the late 1940s and re-release posters from 1955 or later.

The Sidewalks Of New York Australian one sheet is possibly from the Pickles auction held in 1998 where three copies of this one sheet were sold.

Your original comment doesn't change my view or a whole lot of other very experienced people's views about the original poster of which you are talking. And so as we both have said our piece on it, let get back to the discussion at hand.

Don't often see Alvin "Hap" Hadley (the artist) stuff come up, of course almost everyone would like a copy of The General but this is quite nice.

Alvan “Hap” Hadley (1985-1976): As a movie poster artist Alvan Hadley (Hap) created posters for some of the best-loved silent movies. Some of his most well known works are the posters he produced for Buster Keaton’s 1927 movies “The General” and “College,” and for Charlie Chaplin’s 1928 Oscar-winning film, “The Circus.”

Only one original “The General” is known to have survived and fetched $46,000 at a Christie’s auction in 1994; In 2013 a slightly ‘trimmed’ window card of The General surfaced on eBay with an asking price of $9,995 or best offer – the window card was withdrawn from sale stating an offer was accepted. A restored, on linen, poster of “The Circus” sold for just over $13,000 in 2007.

His career spanned some 30 years, and although he mainly produced for MGM he also supplied movie posters for many of the other major Hollywood studios he also produced some of the promotional posters for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

Howard Hughes’ famous 1930 WWI aerial combat movie (Hell’s Angels) was represented on a movie poster drawn by Hap – very few of his art appears at auctions today but from time to time a bargain is still to be had should they ever come available.

Hap’s style was very much characterisation, a style that he developed an official artist for the Marine Corps, producing propaganda-laden cartoon strips. As a result of this background his drawing style is almost instantly recognisable in many of his movie posters when his art comes up for sale.

You can find his vintage movie posters in such film titles as:

    Laff That Off (1923)

    Rough House Rosie (1927)
    The General (1927)
    College (1927)
The Jazz Singer (1927) - movie program

    The Circus (1928)
    T-Bone Handicap (1928)
Laff It Off (1928) – Broadways stage show

The Locked Door (1929) - herald

    Hell’s Angels (1930)
    Be Yourself! (1930)
Puttin' On the Ritz (1930) - herald
The Treasure Chest (1930) - a series of educational films shorts

    Sidewalks of New York (1931)
    Arrowsmith (1931) - pressbook
Quit Cryin' The Blues (1931) - sheet music

    Cock of the Air (1932)

    Reform Girl (1933)
    The Big Chance (1933)
    Cheating Blondes (1933)

    Play! Girls (1936)

    Devil in the Flesh (1949)

(If anyone knows of his other titles, please let me know)
