     86

Before I rest my involvement in this quiz for a while, a challenge. The above two images, hopefully can be solved. They are strongly connected. Any idea of what the two films names are? One is much shorter than the other.
  • Is 86 the Three Stooges short "Hoi Polloi? (1935)

    Peter
  • Is 86 the Three Stooges short "Hoi Polloi? (1935)

Yes you are correct, as it is Hoi Polloi from 1935. Well done for promptly answering this one.  Moe Howard iis seen showelling rubbish in the original posted image. Two 1935 films Laddie and Mississippi are to be seen being advertised in the background.
  • Mississippi gave me the time frame for the film and it had the feel of a Stooges short for some reason.

I earlier watched this scene on YouTube out of curiosity. Hoi Polloi is availale to view there in a complete version.

    Final clue is season.
  • Just recognised Peter Gallagher, so that must be him and Daryl Hannah in Summer Lovers (1982)

Yes indeed # 85 is Summer Lovers from 1982, Peter Gallagher was well spotted, and along with Daryl Hannah that is Valerie Guennessen in the scene,

In the image the poster that the three actors are looking at is of the the 3 Stooges. One film that they ended up viewing inside the cinema was Hoi Poloi ( 1935 ), hence my earlier ''connection'' clue.

  • I remember that in the early 90s. Summer Lovers was shown uncut on KWGN in Denver.  I believe it was a test case on broadcast censorship.
  •  87
     88

We're back. Let's see how you go with these two?

  • 88 is Matinee (1992)
I believe the fake movie being shown was Mant.  I recall seeing the short loop of the footage when we rented the video.

Correct and well remembered. Matinee was released in 1993.

''For "Mant," the movie-within-the-movie, Joe Dante cast actors who had actually appeared in 1950s-era science fiction movies. These included Kevin McCarthyRobert Cornthwaite, and William Schallert '' ( IMDb trivia )

  •  Clue for # 87 is enjoyment for some.
  • 87.  Popcorn
Correct, Popcorn was released in 1991.

  •  89  90

Excellent response in answering the previous two images. Here are two more going back somewhat earlier images to challenge you.
  • I'll go for the tougher one.  90 is Autumn Leaves (1956) with Joan Crawford and Cliff Robertson

Correct. The film poster displayed on the wall is The Man From Laramie ( 1955 ).

  • Clue for # 89 is product placement from the same company.  A misleading poster design, but this doesn't matter anyway in the quest to come up with the answer. The advertised film is for a forthcoming attraction.
  • I am thinking # 89 will be too hard to answer. It would appear though that Jay may know the answer, so I am happy to hear from him if he does have the answer.
  • Lady Killer (1933)
I thought Cagney in the photo was a big clue.

    # 89  is indeed Lady Killer, but the image is of Edward G, Robinson not James Cagney.,

Warner Brothers  were promoting one of their own upcoming films The Dark Hazars ( 1934 ).  They were a little brazen though  as they incorrectly  used a scene from their earlier Edward G, Robinson 1931 gangtser film Little Caesar on the poster. This was very misleading as The Dark Hazard wasn't even a gangster film, but was a drama about a professional gambler and a greyhound called Dark Hazard in the film.

Robinson with War Cry who played dark Hazard in the film and the novel the film was adapted from. The novel by W.R. Burnett is certainly not as well known as  Little Caesar, The Asphalt Jungle and High Sierra, which were also all adapted into films..
  • But isn't that Cagney on the left staring at the poster?  That was my clue as it sure looks like him.

According to IMDb the two men looking at the poster are movie patrons played by Dewey Robinson and Tammany Young. Yes the person on the left could be mistaken for Cagney, but it doesn't matter as you came up with the correct answer anyway,
