I couldn't find the area to look up .gallery or should I assume poster.gallery is already taken.

Just type it in, eg xyz.gallery (include the .gallery)

We haven't had time to set the tick search option. And yes poster.gallery is gone, it is one of those things, all the smart names go very very quickly - with over 200 million names already registered (in all level domains) it doesn't take long for the short and easy ones to go.
