You Are Only As Good As ..........

I have often been disappointed by the inferior artwork produced by some Australian poster artists who worked at the printers Robert Burton and F. Cunninghame & Co. in particular, starting mainly in the 1950s. Occasionaly though the problem I had is with some of the artists not  getting the likeness of certain of the featured actors looking like who they should have, within an otherwise impressive poster design.  A classic example of this is Johnny Angel ( 1945 ).

The Johnny Angel image of Claire Trevor is great, but the George Raft image I have a real problem with in that in my eyes it doesn't look like him at all. Comparing it to the impressive RKO Australian daybill of Race Street ( 1948 ) starring George Raft and also produced by the same printer Simmons the image of George Raft here is spot on along with William Bendix and Marilyn Maxwell images.

The problem with the inaccurate looking George Raft Johnny Angel image doesn't belong with the Australian poster artist in this case. but lies with the original U.S. material, as seen below, that was apparently copied from here. The Australian poster artisr did a great job of only copying what he saw in front of him.

I started reading and was going to comment that some of the US artwork is the same in terms of the depiction of Raft - but you caught it ?

I wonder if it was actually mixed up with another actor from the film?

Also now I need to dream about finding a Race Street daybill ❤️
  • Race Street! Fun movie and the Daybill is fantabulous!
