True Grit - Original or reissue?

While we are on the subject of dating daybills, True Grit is one which is worth clarifying. The original is pictured to the left (thanks Craig) but the other four are variously described on different sites as original - 1971 release. They have all been described on ebay as original at one time or another. What do you all think?

  • The original daybill on the left is rare. First time I have ever sighted an original True Grit daybill. The film was released in Sydney Australia on the 10th of October, 1969. Note ''A Paramount Picture'' printed along the bottom of this poster. You will notice on the bottom of the images of the four remaining daybills   "Distributed by CIC Cinema International Corporation. As CIC was only registered on the 9th of April,1970 this certainly rules out that they are from the film's first Australian release the year before. These four daybills would havebeen follow up printings completed between  mid to late 1970 up to late1971 when the Not Suitable For Children censorship rating, which the four posters have on them,  was changed to NRC.

  • The problematical daybill is the one that is second from left. This has been described as original by many sellers.

Because of the colour I guess and possibly not ever having seen the rare original and when I say rare I mean rare.

To support my statement that the only daybill from the original Australian release that happened in October, 1969 is the first one shown above I wish to state that this daybill, along with the Australian one sheet which is also 1969 first release that appears in the eMovieposter.com Auction History section ( and again is an image I cannot download on this thread ), are first release for the following reason. The book from which the film was adapted from was published in 1968 the year before the film's release. On these two posters it has ''The year's best seller!'' printed on them both. On the four remaining daybills this statement has been removed as these posters were printed later in 1970 or1971 after CIC came into existence in Australia and before NRC rating replaced the Not Suitable For Children rating.

  • Thanks Ves. At least you could download it. This is the only Australian one sheet in any form that I have seen of True Grit.
