HA and EMP

edited December 2015 in For Members
I thought it was interesting that today as EMP's auction of 8x10s was coming to a close HA also had a pile of 8x10s (let's be honest they rarely do) and a few weeks back when EMP had their Signature Auction one of which was specifically Star Wars event, HA also had a pile of SW.

Dunno, probably a coincidence but given one house publishes the content of what they are running many weeks in advance it wouldn't take much to drop a few in to your own one just to take advantage of the hype being generate elsewhere.

Ambush marketing? Possibly.

Poor form? Some may say so but it's business and as they do say "to the victor belong the spoils".

That said, anyone who didn't take advantage of the Star Wars release to make a few schekels were mugs, certain people I know did quite well with their quiet selling - and there were LOTS of others too. Besides the calendar is getting crowded, we have just had Morrie's dump, HA's Signature, along with EMP's Major, plus a few others doing quite a bit of work in the last few months.

Just goes to show there is still good paper is still out there, some of us have seen it, some of us have heard it whispered about in darken corners where secret handshakes are required.

Just rambling...I like watching the game people play in business, it's fun.

I have noticed that also David re HA and EMP.  I recall this also happening for Halloween auction last year.
  • Of greater concern to me is that there seem to be continual shipping problems with Heritage.

What kind of shipping problems john?

Here is the latest one. I paid on 30th Nov for an item won at the signature auction. They acknowledged receipt and said they would notify the shipping dept to send. I checked online and no sign of a tracking number so I can only assume it has not been sent. I have asked for a tracking number and they have not responded, escalated it to paypal and no response there.
  • Not to mention the ridiculous cost of shipping....

Sorry to here that john.  When i have run into these types of problems i email grey smith directly and it resolves asap. Of course it should never have to come to that but i like peace of mind. Good luck!
  • I have emailed Grey in the past and he has always fixed it but you shouldn't have to do that every time there is an issue. Their staff should respond to queries in a reasonable time.
  • I have found a good way to solve Heritage's shipping disasters.

  • Don't bid.

    Agree.

And there's the rub...they have nice stuff.
  • I've taken the don't bid option, sadly David is right they do have some good stuff, and apart from the `buyer's commission' some of the prices are quite low.

I agree! I've bought about 10 items from them, never any issues. But they should be even more prompt with their Signature Auctions. 3+ weeks is much too long. Good luck.

Grey does a great job in putting the auctions together but I think he gets let down by the shipping department, particularly on international orders. I agree with Rick. Its not worth the hassle.

Perhaps - but good paper is hard to ignore.

I've been let down both from a poor delivery service (constant issue) to having poster arrive in worse condition than it was sent (poor packing) - there is no doubt Heritage Auctions has poor service - this is anecdotal within the hobby. Unfortunately despite the fact the Grey does step in and fix it it seems the problem continues. The reality is, it's Grey's department, so the buck stops with him, and as nothing has improved so one wonders if anything is being done to try to fix it.
  • I have solved the HA shipping problem;
I pick them up ! Only about 30 miles away. But now tax is collected !
    DOH !
    Cant win !
  • I don't buy from HA...  The last thing I bought they actually taped the poster down when preparing it for ship.  That may be able to get great poster but they are amateurs in packing and shipping...
  • I had a horror (no pun intended) experience with HA a couple of years ago. I've not even bothered trying to bid with them since.
  • it makes you wonder how they keep going with poster sales. Nearly everyone i know has had a horror experience with H.A. I consigned once and that experience was even worse than the buying/postage experience.

    Probably about volume.

When we shifted from NSW to VIC Grace Removals damaged my bike quite badly and although they paid for its repair they did proudly state that they 'moved 38,000 people per year and have a 97% satisfaction rating' to which I responded 'that having over 1,100 unhappy clients each year is not something a company should be pleased with'

I would imagine Heritage do such volume that they probably think a few whiners is simply 'collateral damage'.

At their last Signature Auction, they put up over 1,000 poster, just 15 (less than 2%) of those accounted for over 25% of their total sales ($2M in toto). I bet those 15 customers got looked after...so the answer is, be one of the 2%. :p

They are no longer getting as many bids from me. Up until 2010, I had bid over 100k on Heritage auctions (you can check your own figures in MyHeritage). Many of these were losing bids, but the more bids that they get the better the prices for their consignors. Since 2010, I pretty much stopped bidding on the Sunday auctions and only occasionally bid at signature auctions. I bid on most of Bruce's auctions and have never had a problem. If Heritage was able to improve their customer service they would do even better than they are doing now.

Double Indemnity...will be interesting, they've sold four (since 2004), at ever decreasing prices and there's one available on the open market...

Absolutely 100%; like a bad restaurant - people talk, people listen.

Some readers may not realise that part of your comment was actually a link to HA auctions. The colour of the linked text is very close to the normal coloured text and you are probably only going to see it as a link if you hover the mouse over it.

Would it be possible to make links like that clearer?

    I underlined it.

And made it hotpink, MistyRose just for the Queenslanders... =)

And added a cool little css effect (blue transition bar), because I was bored and besides it should keep Matt happy for hours.  :D
