FLASH GORDON. I HAVE QUESTIONS.

Even though my immediate question was answered I still have other questions if you wouldn't care read through the comments. I appreciate being here and all the help!

I've been up all night waiting for to get into this forum! Whew! Ok! Hi. My names Bethani I'll tell ya about me later.. I found a poster and I think it's a fake but there's something else to it! And I wanna know everything. And if you can help me figure it out I'll sell it I'm in it for the dopamine not the wall art ok. Here's the details. 14x36 it's linen backed (expensive linen canvas at that) but this thing is cut in 4 sections but was printed in one peice . It's lithograph. But from what seems to be a copy and for the love of what why is it jumbled and not like any of the known versions!? Heeellllppp please and thank you!

  • Hi Bethani and welcome aboard.

This poster design is Australian in origin and originally would have been printed in what we call in  Australia a long daybill format, with this being  15 x 40 in size, It should have also had a blank section at the top of the poster added to be used for theatre and play dates information.  An example of this practice is shown in the below 1938 poster example which was also printed for the same distributor by Marchant & Co.

  • That's helpful thank you!

Additional question.. has there ever been instances found that reprints were made just for archival reasons? I mean these are archival linen.. and why wouldn't they just print it on the linen. I feel kinda dumb now that I've looked up the others that were with it and how much those are worth. But I'm still so confused.. there is too much money wrapped up in these to risk fakes. Any examples of printing company's doing something like this for archival reasons? In spite of myself I can't stop my mind from wanting to know everything before tossing all of these.
  • and the ink is beautiful! I wanna know about that.. you can see the layers .. is this how lithograph ink looks or is this modern printer work?

  • I don’t know what you have but you’ve got everyone’s attention now…
  • It’s really difficult to tell what exactly you have but if you could take closer images of the text near the bottom and maybe detail pics of the different part of the linen, paper, and poster.

If you haven’t already you’ll be getting messages on these from auction houses and dealers. What is more disturbing is how they are stored there with duck tape.

Need more background. How did you come across them, etc…

    Eagerly awaiting more intel!
  • Also measurement on the posters on the linen.

There was a time when folks were trying to take commercial posters and pass them off as real. The duck tape just bugs me because no one would do this to linenbacked posters unless they had no respect for them like being stolen or fakes. A leap - yes but it bothers me unless you taped them up.

It may take sending them to a well known auction house for inspection.
  • OK this is a long story I'll try to cut to the chase. I restore old homes and a friend of a friend restores cabins.. he needed my help on some flooring restoration so I was there to pick up the boards. TMI but this guy is on one all the time high when I got there and he's pulling these things out of plastic and looking at the and said he found them under the floor. (Owners of the house had not moved in yet and previous owner passed) he's rolling these things up with duck tape as I'm panicking bc as I know nothing of movie posters I do know art prints and these were on NICE linen. He put them in his truck and I told him I would follow him home so I could store them right and I'd take one to research.he said he doesn't care what they are worth (which meant he's thing garage walpaper) anyway I got them stored the best I could and here we are.
  • Well poster under floor boards don’t come linenbacked unless they were hidden there.

    Post some more pictures please!
  • The only reason I haven't passed out yet is that the one I grabbed (wrong one obviously) is a copy .. a good one but a copy.. I can see bc they didn't bother to trim it right. There are tears I can feel and ones that are printed. But there's too many whys.. why the linen why the silica packets how were these printed at such high quality. Why is the paper so aged if they are fakes why go through all that and not bother to trim it right.. NOTHING adds up. If this guy wasn't 2 hours away I'd be there right now with my camera and magnifying glass. I'm a little nauseous man lol

Right. Tell me what your looking for
  • As charlie said, if you can share better pictures of the print at the bottom of the posters and the measurements it will be easier to determine what they might be.  Why anyone would put restored posters under boards is beyond me...have seen plenty of posters used for insulation, but never on linen.
  • I know. I don't get it I'm at a loss I wasn't in there they could have been sitting on a closet shelf for all I know I walked in to pick up flooring and walked into these. But I was talking about how they were stored. ( thoughtfully) I'm here to figure out where these need to go now. To an auction, someone here, or left to the addict for wallpaper. I am charging my camera to get you guys the best photos possible so we can all unclench our frankenberries. 20 minutes.
  • 22x42 . It's not centered
  • Really wanted to know if the ink on originals look like this
  • This damage line.. printed that way
  • And same here
  • This thing is either cut or pieced together in 4 sections. And every section measures different by several inches
  • can you share the details at the bottom of the frankenstein as well
  • I only grabbed this one for now.^^^ Wish it was that one haha

  •  Any chance of seeing a full image of the partly seen poster appearing behind the Flash Gordon poster?
