My first thought on C661 was White Heat (1949) because of the rear projection gasometers in the background, so I did a bit of searching and that looks like it.

Yes it is indeed The Public Enemy from 1931. Well done Bruce, and I had thought that you could be the person to come up with the answer and I was right. That is actor Edward Woods being shot, with James Cagney looking on. Originally the roles that they were signed to play were of the opposite character, but this casting was reversed before the shooting of the film commenced.

Correct and well done. A memorable scene near the end of the film. Marty from 1955. A great movie that won four Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Writing, Screenplay.
