So how does this one affect the discussion .....

Two different one sheets, two different daybills - I personally think it helps my case. Although, both one sheets I'm aware of are M.A.P.S - no Robert Burton.

Has anyone seen an Australian Jaws RR one sheet?

  • This is a great website that has some history of movie releases in Australia. Whilst it doesn't provide any details on a RR of Jaws 2, it does confirm that (at least at this cinema), Jaws 2's initial run ended in March 1979:

As a side note, have a browse around - there's lots of interesting stuff on the site.

There is some logic in the argument based on the international re-release, and I have found in 1980, Jaws 2 played as a double feature at a Drive-in - but just the one, doesn't actually make it an official re-release.

Problem is by 1982 it was out on VHS (and Beta?) available for hire for as little as $5 per week.

Was it this drive-in? http://caarp.edu.au/screenings/venue/730?page=102. Jaws 2 was showing in Feb / March 1980.

I've also found reference on Trove: http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/125627118?searchTerm="jaws 2" 1980&searchLimits= showing Jaws and Jaws 2 showing at a drive in Canberra in Oct 1980.

  • The trouble is that, although it is a reasonable theory, there is no proof as yet.
  • For the sake of the discussion, Jaws 2 was re-released in the USA on Feb 15 1980.
  • I think the definition here has to be defined, I don't think a Drive-in showing it as a double feature with Jaws I means it's a re-release.

I am happy either way...proof is all we need.

    I agree.
  • While we're working on definitions - define 'proof' for me!

Jaws 2 was initially released in 1978 and there is some evidence to show it stopped it's initial run in early 1979. It was re-released internationally in Feb 1980 and there are at least 2 examples of it being shown in Australia after that time. There are certainly different posters out there for the film which is often an indicator of a RR.

I'm happy to keep building a case - tell me what you need to see.

I have found a 20th of December, 1979 screening in Australia of solely Jaws 2. The film was initially released in Australia according to IMDB as being  on the 30th of November, 1978.

The image above is from the U.S. 1980 re-release so I am thinking if there was to be a re-release in Australia they would have used this design or something similar.

As relating to the two Australian Jaws 2 Australian one sheets it was a common practice by CIC to have variations in colour posters printed for the same release throughout the 1970s into the 1980s . This is a fact backed up by dozens of examples.

Again no concrete proof one way or the other that there was or wasn't an official Australian re-release but in my mind I very much doubt it happened.

  • Hey all, I happened to notice a couple of visits to my site on my stats so thought I'd pop over.

Firstly, thanks for the kind words Pancho.

Regarding JAWS 2 getting a reissue, I'm not exactly sure on how the definition works, however in November 1980 it turned up for 2 weeks at Melbourne's Rapallo theatre as support for JAWS.

However, earlier that year (in February) it turned up at ten Village Drive-Ins for a week as support to a re-issue of THE STING and then in July at 5 Village Drive-ins as support for SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT.

For the drive-ins at least this was a pretty wide release, albeit one not *that* long after its original release. Would have been enough daybills still in stock from the original release to cover these screenings?

BTW cool forum here. I have a thousand or so posters in my collection, looks like I'll be spending a bit of time in this place!
  • All I read was "...a thousand posters in my collection"

     =)
  •  =)

David, I was a pretty serious collector back in the 80s and 90s. Concentrated on various things - Paramount daybills designed by Richardson studios, anything featuring Randolph Scott, Ealing, film noir and early Australian films. The good thing about collecting back then was that the stuff was available and the prices were low. (two bucks for an original THE TIME MACHINE daybill!)

I think I stopped collecting after a dealer ripped me off $500 on a deal and the fun just stopped. However the collection remains intact and will be a nice little nest egg to leave to my kid when she is old enough.
  • Sounds like a great collection, look forward to you sharing some of you favourites over here: http://vintagemoviepostersforum.com/categories/your-collection
  • three years ago I would have said..."daybill"? "Richardson" studio? now...would be great to see some of your collection.

  • I'm wondering if you have any of the up to now unseen Richardson daybills?
  • Okay, okay - settle down all you drooling Richardson collectors - let's get back to the Jaws 2 RR topic! I'm thinking we have some additional info that probably settles the argument now as a definite 'maybe'. Thoughts?
  • Only a maybe... ;)

    The question is of course:

Is it logical for a commercial printer who couldn't/wouldn't fire up a printing press for much less than a run of 500 let alone re-do the plates, for a couple of Drive-in showings?
